The Beserman are an indigenous small numbered group in Russia who live mainly in North-Western Udmurtia. The number of the Besermans, according to the 2002 census, reached 3100, however, in the census of 2010 only 2201 persons identified themselves as Beserman. Beserman dialect of the Udmurt language is unwritten and endangered.

The project aimed at study and description of the Beserman dialect was started in 2003 by a group of linguists from Moscow. The fieldwork is carried out mostly in the village of Shamardan (Yukamenskoye district, Udmurtia). Since 2009, the linguistic expeditions have been organized on a regular basis. The members of the project currently include researchers and students from Moscow State University, National Research University Higher School of Economics, and other institutions, as well as independent researchers.

One of the results of our fieldwork is a digital Beserman-Russian dictionary, which comprises about 4,500 entries. Alongside basic information, such as the translation equivalent and usage examples, each entry includes grammatical information (e. g. on verbal government), sound recordings, pictures (for plants and traditional artifacts), hyperlinks to synonyms, hypernyms or hyponyms, fixed idiomatic expressions, and derived forms.

Another significant result is a corpus consisting of transcribed and manually glossed texts which were recorded in the course of the fieldwork. The corpus size is currently approximately 65,000 tokens and will increase in the nearest future. The dictionary and the corpus are interconnected: when searching for a word, the user is provided with usage examples taken automatically from the corpus.

Other results of the project can be found in numerous publications of its participants.
